Our Story

In the early seventies, John Hansen was an aspiring writer. Unable to find a book he found pleasure writing in, he decided the first step was to learn how to make that book. That quest led him toward what is now the Watermark Bindery. He constructed a handbound book made with quality interior paper that was hand sewn so it would lay open flat. With these fine ingredients, what resulted was a handbound book that people really enjoyed using. He sold his unique books to independent bookstores including Elliot Bay Book Co. who continues to offer the largest selection of our books.
In 1995 John moved the bindery to Port Townsend from Indianola, WA. Learning of a new bookbinder in her home town, Virginia Marston approached John about an internship. She began by collating paper into signatures. Eight years later Virginia had learned all the aspects of constructing the books and was John’s main case maker.
After 30 years of making his living as a bookbinder John explored a career change in real estate. Check out his website at www.nowporttownsend.com.

Virginia Marston with her husband, Ned Herbert, a former organic farmer, purchased the Watermark bindery from John in 2003.

The Watermark continues producing fine handbound books for your enjoyment. Thank you for using our books.
